MAILING LIST AND IRC

Mailing list:

After you have googled without finding the answer to your problem, you can look for help on the Mailing list (ML).

First search the mailing list archives by entering keywords related to your problem in the search field at the following page:
http://e.kevb.net/lurker/list/cinelerra.en.html

To subscribe go to this page:

When sending a message to the mailing list or talking on IRC you are supposed to follow some rules. These are obvious rules, so obvious that the Cinelerra Community didn't write them down anywhere. Newbies will likely discover the esitence of a rule by breaking it. If you don't wish to live the consequence of it, you can opt for prevention. You can either acquire telepathic skills or look at the rules of other communities.

Here are some rule lists:

Attachements:

A (well hidden) rule specific to Cinelerra ML is the size limit for attachements: 40 KB. Beyond this size your message will be held until the list moderator can review it for approval. Either the message will get posted to the list, or you will receive notification of the moderator's decision.
It's always a good idea to avoid attachements completely, upload your file and send only a link to the list.

Dropster is a good site to upload e-mail attachements. It's very easy to use:

  1. Press "Browse" to open your file browser.
  2. Look for the file on your computer and select/open it.
  3. Press the red button "Dropster".
  4. Go for more option on the "separate page" link.
  5. Copy the first of the three addresses and paste it on your e-mail or IRC message.

When trouble shooting on IRC it can happen that you need to quote an error. If it's only one line long you can copy and paste it. If it is longer, don't copy and paste it on the channel or you will be accused of "flooding". Instead, use a pastebin, (a site for temporary upload of text) and copy and paste on the channel only the link to your text.

Here are some pastebins you can use:

IRC:

Internet Realy Chat (IRC) is a powerful means of communication. It's a form of real-time, text-based, multi-user synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums (called channels), but also allows one-to-one communication and data transfers via private message.
CinelerraCV community meets on channel #cinelerra, hosted on a Network called Freenode. Freenode provides discussion facilities for the Free and Open Source Software communities and for not-for-profit organizations. To know more about Freenode visit http://freenode.net/.

To join IRC you need an IRC client (the application to connect). In Ubuntu you can use Pidgin Internet Messenger.
